Why would you want to study a language that isn’t widely used any longer? Wouldn’t it be more practical to study Spanish, French, or Mandarin instead? The fact is that developing an understanding of Latin is hugely beneficial to learning ANY other language and can set you up for success with a lot less struggle if you’re able to pull it off. English is just one example of this, with more than half the words in the English language coming from Latin or having Latin roots. By learning Latin, you learn English better. Latin also helps hone your understanding of languages themselves, making topics such as grammar child’s play. Latin is the root for much of the modern scientific vocabulary, and forms the backbone of law, government, logic and theology. Perhaps most importantly, Latin trains the mid, making it flexible and able to adapt to learning difficult concepts in other fields as well.
